Interval Walking Burns More Calories

Scientific weight loss studies show the effectiveness of interval walking. It gets the fat-burning results of a long, hard workout but with routines as short as 20 minutes. The more weight you need to lose, the more effective interval walking is.

Walking can be the best exercise to lose weight because its easy and comfortable to do. Walking also helps:
• Boost your energy
• Strengthen your immunity
• Reduce joint pain
• Sharpen your mind
• Lower your cholesterol

If losing weight is your main objective for walking, you should interval walk and get the most bang for your effort. In other words, lose the most weight and burn off more calories in half the time.
How to get the most health benefits of walking and lose the most weight: Speed up for short periods. This will work your muscles and raise your metabolism. When you raise your metabolism, you burn fat. Then you slow it down, walk slower and relax. This is called entering the recovery period.
This one simple change in your daily walking pattern will change how your body responds to walking. If you are a regular walker, you already know that after walking a couple of miles daily or 3 or 4 times a week, whatever your schedule may be, that couple of miles becomes easier. It has become easier but something else has happened too. You are not losing the pounds like you did when you first started walking. Your muscles have adjusted to the 2 mile walk and have become more efficient. That's great but what do you do now? You can either walk more miles and spend more time walking or change your walking pattern.
By changing your walking pattern with interval walking, you will burn three times more fat by burning more calories. You will also target problem areas like belly fat. Interval walking changes how your body responds to walking. Its still walking and enjoyable but you just walk at different speeds (with a little jogging added).

You can walk for 5 minutes or so, then jog for another 5 minutes. Then, walk faster again. Slow down if you become out of breath and then sprint for a minute before you walk again. From this point, simply alternate your running and walking for the next 15 minutes until you are finished. Develop your own methods. As for myself, I walk between mailboxes, jog to the next and sprint to the next one and then take a nice deep breath and go into recovery mode.

The body continues to burn calories at a higher rate after you are finished exercising. This is called the  after burn effect. Interval walking increases this effect as much as possible so your body is still burning calories and fat at an accelerated rate while you are watching TV long after your workout is finished.Weight loss studies have shown that interval walking can burn up to nine times more fat per minute of exercise! It does this by fooling your muscles so they are constantly adjusting to new situations. As a result they don't adjust to that 2 mile walk you do. Its a totally different walk everyday and they burn more calories and you lose more fat during that 2 mile walk without increasing the distance and having to increase the time spent.
You burn more fat in less time!

You Are What You Eat

Balancing your diet and your busy professional life can be a difficult task. Considering how you're spending most of your time at work, you have little time for your nutrition and diet. But good health is necessary to live; how can you then make time to pay attention on your diet?

Actually you don't need to, not much anyway as there are a few ways that you can modify your diet. These are very small and it takes almost no time to make these changes. Here are three small but very useful dietary modifications you can make:

Avoid Cooked Breakfasts

First thing in the morning the body is still in cleanse mode. As such it is important to avoid heavy, cooked breakfasts first thing as this is going against what your body naturally wants to do. Eat light breakfasts such as fruit first thing in the morning, which lines your stomach and may result in you eating less.

Alternatively, try eating something like porridge with flaxseeds or pumpkin seeds. Both of these seeds are a good source of omega-3 (another source of which is fish) which is good for the joints and can help prevent depression, and brain conditions such as Alzheimer's and Dementia. So avoid cooked breakfasts in the mornings and opt for something that's easier on your digestive system.

Reduce your portion sizes

You tend to lose track of what you eat and how much you eat when your mind is preoccupied. You're worried about deadlines, presentations and meetings at work, so you don't pay attention to how much you're eating. You can, however, easily rectify this by simply reducing your portions sizes. Reducing your food intake means you don't overeat, and you'll be consuming only what your body really needs.

Overeating is one of the most common causes of obesity, acidity, high cholesterol and diabetes. By eating smaller portions you reduce the risk exponentially of ending up with one or more these conditions. In addition to reducing your portion sizes, try to eat more slowly so you can more easily recognize when you're full, as well savouring the flavour of your food.

Drink more water

While caffeine may be beneficial in the short term by keeping you awake and alert, the extra sugar dosage you get from it is not. Avoid coffee if you can as it is an artificial stimulant. If you absolutely need it, try to skip the sugar or reduce the amount. In addition, increase the amount of water you consume throughout the day by keeping a water bottle with you and taking periodic sips from it. The water will keep you hydrated and refreshed throughout the day and reduce the need for coffee and other stimulants.

These small but simple dietary modifications will allow you to live a much healthier and more nutritious lifestyle. Contrary to popular belief, the key to a healthy lifestyle does not require big changes. Small modifications, much like the ones discussed in this article, can make a huge difference to the quality of your health and life. The challenge is to stick with them, not give in to temptation and be consistent.

Stay Younger Longer

One thing for sure folks: Everyone loses this battle but staying healthy takes good food, exercise, positive mental thoughts, yes, you can do this and yes, you can cheat occasionally. I love ice cream but in moderation. I can't do that moderation thing so I refuse to bring it in the house. Believe me I have tried. I can devour an entire gallon of ice cream in  one and a half days! No crap, really. Love pasta, pizza, and Chinese food too ! I set aside 1 day a week to choose one of those evil dishes and enjoy the hell out of them. Bet some of you do too.

His Toe Fell Off

It's a rough title for the beginning of my nursing career. I will never forget it and it's a wonder I continued. Several of my fellow nursing students and I were finally having the opportunity to go to one of the units in the hospital near our school. After 6 months of hitting the books, I was excited and ready to start the real thing.

Our instructor entered the room first and introduced us to Jake. I smiled and my eyes diverted right to this guy's feet, the sheet pulled up as if to air them out but it was just to prevent the sheets from rubbing on his feet. They were black, one more so than the other. It was actually wood like and brittle in appearance.

Our instructor had already told us Jake was a diabetic who didn't follow his diet at all and probably didn't take his meds as ordered. Jake was an "older" guy but at 19 I thought anyone over 40 was older. He allowed us to look at his feet and ask questions. I was standing close to the bed and without warning, Jake had a spasm of some sort and his leg moved up just as I  dropped my arm to my side. I only brushed against his foot but touched his little toe. It fell off onto the sheet. I gasped, then silence. Not a word from anyone. Jake didn't even notice!

Needless to say, it was a rough morning.
